Helping to Increase Knowledge and Awareness
A dynamic coalition of experts from the healthcare, business, and fundraising sectors of Long Island, Women & Men Against Prostate Cancer, Inc. is driving a collaborative initiative that is working toward improving, and expanding, treatment options; furthering education efforts; generating legislative action in support of prostate cancer research and treatment; and, most importantly, increasing awareness about the disease, and how its incidence will inevitably impact the lives of every man and woman.
Women, in particular, share vital support roles as both healthcare watchdogs, and treatment advocates for the men in their lives. Early, and regular testing, is the most effective way to combat prostate cancer. Understanding, and recognizing, the initial warning signs requires insight, diligence and honest communication between partners, and all family members. By raising public awareness, promoting research, advancing new healthcare options, emphasizing early detection, and making diagnosis and treatment more affordable for cancer patients and their families, WAM is helping to reverse a deadly trend. The organization is committed to shielding families from the devastating effects of prostate cancer, through its counseling and support services for patients and families battling the disease— and widows, whose husbands have lost the fight.
Co-founded by Lorraine Pace, founding president of Breast Cancer Help, Dominick Mavellia, prominent L.I. developer, and Mr. Sunny Ailawadi, MS, CMD, RT(T), Physics Department , SUNY Stony Brook Radiation Oncology Chief Dosimetrist and Clinical Asst Professor, School of Health Technology, the regional non-profit has dedicated its influence and resources to bringing the stigma, and misconceptions, related to prostate cancer out of the shadows.
Our Mission Statement
Sharing Our Insights
The acceleration of metastatic prostate cancer diagnoses over the past decade has revealed an alarming statistic. Studies have shown a startling 72 percent increase in diagnosed cases— impacting men between the ages of 55 to 69 at an even greater rate of 92 percent.* Reports suggest that fewer men are being screened at an early age— or tested on a regular basis. It also hints that the disease may be coming more aggressive. If either scenario, or both, has contributed to this recent, and rapid, escalation of prostate cancer, it indicates a greater urgency for PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) testing… early and often.
